Sometimes You Just Need to Turn It Off

I am just home from vacation, and I have to admit—I think I needed it more than I realized.

Owning a small business (and growing flowers!) means there is always something you could be doing.

There’s always another bed to weed. Something to plant. Something to order. A post you should probably make. An email you meant to send and at least one project you’ve been saying you’ll get to “next week.”

Even when you love what you do, it can be hard to actually turn it off.

But sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

For a little while, I wasn’t thinking about what needed planting, what was blooming, what I should be posting or what next season should look like.

I just relaxed.

And I’m realizing there’s a difference between not working and actually letting yourself switch off.

Sometimes stepping away gives you the space to remember why you enjoy it in the first place.

Of course, I knew exactly what was waiting for me when we got home. 😂

October on the flower farm definitely isn’t the end of the season. There are tulips to plant, spring flowers to get settled in, tunnels to prepare, beds to clean up—and, because apparently I never learn, plans for even more flowers next year.

But I’m heading back into it feeling rested, excited and ready to get my hands dirty again.

So if you’ve been feeling like you should always be doing something productive, consider this your little reminder from a flower farmer who isn't particularly good at taking her own advice:

Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need to do.

And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to say how thankful we are for all of you.

Whether you stopped at the roadside stand, joined one of our subscriptions, bought a bouquet, shared one of our posts, told a friend about us or simply followed along with another season at The Flower Bar—thank you.

Supporting a small local flower farm might seem like a little thing, but to us, it really isn’t. Every bouquet that leaves the farm means someone chose locally grown flowers and we’re incredibly grateful that so many of you continue to choose ours.

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving. 🍂🌻

Here’s to slowing down when we need to, appreciating what we have and coming back ready for whatever the next season brings.
